Sadness and depression are not the same thing. Most of us will experience sadness more than once in our lifetime. Sadness is a normal human emotion to disappointing life events, failing an exam, losing a job, not getting a job, losing someone close to us, divorce, having a child leave home. Sadness usually passes with time.
Depression on the other hand, is more chronic and is not necessarily connected to a disappointing life event. Depression feels overwhelming and impacts many areas of a person’s life. It usually does not pass with time. Depression can make it difficult to get through the day.
In severe cases of depressive episodes, a person may feel that life is not worth living. If this is the case please call and speak to someone immediately. The suicide and mental health hotline is 988.
Individual therapy can provide a safe place to process your feelings, gain insight and perspective, and learn tools and practices to help you live a more fulfilling life.
